I was approached by a client about a MacBook charging problem. Specifically, the MacBook refused to charge the battery when plugged into the AC adapter. So, I said that I would take the laptop and look up a solution.
So, my preliminary findings were:
· The battery was in good health
· The AC adapter worked
· The charging cord (usb-c to usb-c) worked
After doing an internet search, I found:
This is a possible software problem with MacBooks Pro 2016 and later. The MacBook that I was working on is a 2019 MacBook Pro with an Intel i9 cpu. The fix is –
Turn off the laptop, leave it off for a minute and then turn it back on in Recovery Mode (press command + R after pressing the power on button). Make sure that your charger is plugged in and attached to the laptop.
After opening Recovery Mode and choosing a language, proceed to disconnect the charger. The laptop will warn you that the battery capacity is very low. Ignore the waring, it is a software error. Connect the laptop to the WiFi and open Safari. Browse as much as you can until the battery is completely drained and the laptop shuts down by itself. (If you try to turn the laptop on after the battery is supposedly drained and the low battery warning comes on, then the battery is NOT completely drained. Just leave the laptop on, unplugged from a power source and wait until the battery completely drains itself).
After completely draining the battery, wait for 20 minutes and then connect the charger turn the laptop on. The laptop should charge normally. This protocol should reset the charging process and allow for normal charging.
